College Savings Mississippi held a Valentine Coloring Sweepstakes in February to award a $1,529 Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) scholarship to a Mississippi family. The goal of the sweepstakes was to raise awareness of the importance of saving for college at an early age. Mississippi pre-k through 3rd grade students were invited to enter by coloring a lovable Valentine bear and explain why they love to save.
A coloring page by Abigail Cliburn, a first-grader at Park Place Elementary, was selected from among 265 entries. College Savings Mississippi Director Claire Whittington, presented Abagail and her mother with the MACS scholarship at a short ceremony March 13th.
“So many of our Mississippi children already know what they want to be when they grow up. They’re wearing their college sweatshirts. If they start saving now, they’ll be better able to realize those dreams” said Whittington.
Abagail’s MACS account will be an easy and flexible way for her family to save for college expenses. With a minimum contribution amount of just $25, MACS is very budget friendly. The plan offers investment options that appeal to all types of investors. From the conservative investor (Guaranteed Option) to the aggressive investor (Diversified Equity Option), MACS has the perfect savings option.
As a 529 plan, MACS offers a state tax deduction as well as federal tax deferred earnings. MACS is administered by the Office of the State Treasurer Lynn Fitch, and governed by the College Savings Plans of Mississippi Board of Directors.
